Our Story
Founded in 1988, The First Church of the United Brethren in Christ, Bronx, New York, is the "brainchild" of the Jamaica Conference of the United Brethren Church and the Board of Missions. Formed with the initial intent of providing a place of worship for the growing number of United Brethren members from Jamaica who were living in the Tri-state area, the church has grown to become a melting pot of Caribbean and American Christians.
The initial groups of “founding pastors” from Jamaica include: Rev. Dr. Lloyd Spencer, Rev. Dr. Owen Gordon, Rev. Donald Dacres and Rev. Basil Dunkley. The following church stalwarts are credited as “founding mothers” of the church: Min. Lurline Larmond, Sis. Avis Scott, and Sis. D. Morrison.
Rev. Simon White’s tenure from 1992-1997 saw a large influx of new people into the congregation. Since 1998, Rev. Linton Thomas has led the church in its largest period of growth and expansion. Currently, the church is actively seeking to purchase a larger sanctuary to continue lifting up the name of Jesus and winning souls for the Lord.
